Description

You are viewing new Welsh Cwt-y-bugail Capital Grade blue / grey roofing slate that we have in stock.  The slates measure 400mm x 250mm (16″ x 10″).  You would require approximately 25 slates per m², plus 5% wastage allowance for cuts etc.

Cwt-y-Bugail produces a beautiful dark blue-grey with occasional white veins and unique riven texture. Located east of Blaenau Ffestiniog in North Wales, it has been producing slates from 1840, and was formed by the Ordovician slate beds laid down over 470 million years ago. The Cwt-y-Bugail slate has a distinctive banding known as relic bedding and gives an extremely uniform unfading appearance on the roof. Although without the immense capacity of its sister quarry at Penrhyn it is still able to produce large volumes of roofing slate.

Cwt-y-Bugail Capital Grade is the thinnest production Welsh Slate at 5.5 mm.

Only limited parts of our quarries will make this slate with its fine-grained riven surface. The thinness of the slate gives a flat uniform finish to the roof and was traditionally the material transported to the more distant markets such as London, continental Europe and even as far away as Australia and New Zealand.
